Psalms 90:1 (Quickly)

17 Apr

Psalms 90:1 “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling places throughout all generations.”

I have been quite puzzled by this verse for some time now – what was the Moses (the author) really trying to say?  What was going through his mind when he wrote this?* At least part of the answer, I believe is found in the title.  For forty years Moses faithfully led a seemingly rebellious and stiff necked generation of people around in a wilderness who choose again and again to do exactly opposite to what the Lord had intended for them to do, thus negating God’s promises and blessings.  Yet in spite of this, Moses, while looking back on the faithfulness of God, I believe cries out from the depths of his heart in verse one in wonder and holy awe: “Lord, you (you alone) have been our dwelling place… our refuge in all generations.” Not a particular place nor tent or tabernacle – no, the Holy Spirit on earth: He is and always has been the supply and source of refuge for all believer’s no matter where they been forced to lay down their heads from time to time in each and every generation.  He is protector and comforter, our hope and our shield.  And He is the one that gently whispers to us the promise of that great reward for those that sincerely walk according to his plan and purpose, striving for His best in and for our lives each and every day.  Praise be to God.  Amen.

*I believe this is a correct model for studying all scripture: to look at the words from the writers perspective: not our own.
