John 3:16

31 Mar

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have [instead] eternal life..” The part that jumped off the page to me this morning was this:  “For God so loved the world that he gave…” Many people think of giving as isolated acts of showing kindness or pity that tends to be done on select occasions from time to time (such as holidays, birthdays etc,) or when a particular family need arises.  Many seem to to think that they can justify or perhaps negate a lifetime of selfish living by one or two particular charitable deeds and everything will then be all right.  In some ways they hope to balance the books by this sort of lifestyle.  Yet this is not what the bible says we should do.  If we are to become like our heavenly father than we are supposed to be changed from the inside out.  That selfish person we once were (and we all are inherently born selfish in some respects – just look at two baby siblings who fight over the same toy) must be changed into a symphony of praise and blessing to all whom we meet.  A friendly smile,  a word of wisdom to those who are weak, a cup of cool water to those who are thirsty – these are all ways in which God expects us to behave – for God loveth a cheerful giver.
